Devil's DVD Advocacy: Good Hair

Chris Rock's Good Hair is a documentary that looks at what "good hair" means to African-Americans in our part of the world. It's an incredibly funny and thought provoking movie. The movie brings up a lot of discussion on what hair means to different people. Although it never judges anyone directly it does poke fun at a few people and companies that take hair and themselves too seriously. Always funny. Never judging.
It's also very educational. I learned so much about black people's hair. Seriously. It's a whole different world. Our guide on this hair care odyssey is Chris Rock. As narrator, guide and hilarious translator he takes us along on his search to find out what makes good hair "good hair". His love for his two baby girls inspires Rock to find out how much hair means to African American men and women. From the barbershops and hair salons of Harlem, Atlanta and Los Angeles. To India, where most hair for weaves and wigs now comes from. How it's gotten is very surprising. And, back to Atlanta for a hair show extravaganza finale that has to be seen to be believed. Hilarious. It involves a hair stylist who wears six inch hooker boots. He looks like Gary Coleman in drag.

The movie is one of those documentaries that really get under your skin and makes you think long after the credits have rolled. Rock talks to a lot of people in Good Hair from all walks of life. Almost all of them have something to add to the discussion. Which is more than what most documentaries do. These aren't talking heads speaking just to be heard. These are real people with something to say about something very important to them and most of the world.

The movie is very entertaining and is not like most documentaries out there. It's got a ton of celebrities talking about hair. All are hysterical. I cannot recommend this movie enough.

Oh. And, never ever touch a black woman's hair without permission.
