Brooklyn's Finest (Devil's Advocates Review)

Now in theory, the premise of the film is sound, almost intriguing if not original. The film takes a unique prospective on the in sight from 3 Police Officers of the NYPD, whom are a part of the 65th District, which is hailed as the toughest area of NYC. The events of the film are on how 3 different officers handle their lives within and outside of their job.

But what really makes this film rather unique, is it's "formula" for telling the Officer's stories. Think 2 parts of the film Crash, and 1 part of the film, Before the Devil Knows Your Dead. Knowing the premises in each should give you a good idea for what's in store for the so-called Protagonists in the film.

Now each officer is different in a way that have to deal with their own ordeal of the job. One Officer, (Richard Gere) is set to retire in one week and just wants to make it out in one piece, while another officer on the Narcotics task force (Ethan Hawke) is having trouble making ends meet on a cop's salary, having 4 kids and his wife is pregnant with twins. Finally you have a deep cover officer (Don Cheadle) who has been in deep cover so long, he begins to question what morals should he uphold, surviving the ghetto, or closing the case.

Now I do have to say from the beginning I mentioned that in theory the premise is sound, but not perfect, maybe not even close. For one, I do believe it's some what difficult if you don't have any correlation and similarity to sympathize the set up & characters of Brooklyn's Finest, you're going to have a hard time believing the film.

I personally found it hard to be unbiased towards the characters and situations portrayed in the film. For example, at times the majority of supporting characters such the gang bangers or drug dealers came off really stereotypical, so much to the point I had a hard time finding them believable. Wesley Snipes tries to reprise a Nino Brown type of character from New Jack City, but to me falls a little flat as his persona was lost a long period of time ago (the early 90's).

In reality I was somewhat on the fence with the film, I truly do believe you would find it hard to find an appealing toward the film if you're not a Police Officer or come from the NYC area, but if you like Crash or Before the Devil Knows Your Dead, then you can have an interest in the film. Not a lot of action, the drama at times becomes a little over dramatic and some scenes are drawn out more than needed to be.
