Hot Tub Time Machine has not only a crazy name, but also a crazy premise and crazy antics. Is that enough crazy for you? If not, you can check out the film and see the crazy hair, crazy fashions, crazy energy, and crazy comedic components. Hot Tub Time Machine brings the crazy and it's hilariously rendered for our enjoyment.
Who better to usher in eighties style weirdness and fun than eighties go to guy, John Cusack? Stunt casting? Maybe, but it's a stunt with great payoff. Backed up by Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke, who all bring something unique to the table, Cusack shows a comedic side that has gone unexplored since One Crazy Summer and Better Off Dead. Hot Tub while funny, didn't look to challenge the cast in any real significant way, and sometimes that is when the Cusacks of the world (maybe not Joan) tend to shine.
While Cusack and company manage to knock each and every gag right out of the park, the attention to detail is one of the other standouts of the film. Everything that was garish and inherent about the eighties is there, from the strange looking hairstyles to the over indulgent behavior. While probably not very difficult to replicate in a self-contained setting, such as the lodge the film is set in, the essence of the eighties can be seen in every last detail of the film.
As stated before, there are gags, and the gags are plentiful. One joke leads into another, into another, followed by a hilarious sight gag, ending with some deranged quip. The comedy is extremely frenetic, moving along at whiplash speeds, leaving little time to recover from the previous gags. Simply a funny, funny film from start to finish.
If the title doesn't give it all away, the movie does involve a wee bit of time traveling. Simple, easy to comprehend, though fairly non-sensical, time travel. The time travellling itself is a plot device used to test the depths of friendship among the main characters, outside of their usual setting. From there the story...is rather non-existent. There really isn't much of a story, just motivations, actions, and consequences. But it really doesn't hinder the film's ability to entertain, and this is coming from someone that values story above almost every other aspect of film. The only other ingredient that matters more to me is dialogue, and the dialogue in Hot Tub easily compensates for the lack of story.
Following in the footsteps of the recent batch of "buddies on a bender" films, Hot Tub takes that formula and uses some bizarre mathematical equation to take it to new and awkward places. With quick, rapid fire dialogue and jokes, as well as some unusual sights to see, Hot Tub Time Machine is easily the first watchable comedy of 2010.
